Annual Report SR-CRSP SOCIOLOGY

Sustainable Agropastoral Systems on Marginal Lands-Bolivia

I Narrative Summary

With the support of PL480 Bolivia and Synthesis Funding from the SR-CRSP, the sociology and economics project undertook several activities this year. Working with our co-investigators in Bolivia and collaborating scientists in the U.S. strategies pursued by farmers in semi-arid risk prone environments were analyzed with cluster analysis of 1993 survey. Completed analysis provided a typology of farmers according to production strategies and stage in the life cycle in San José Llanga. A preliminary report on the agricultural calendar to assess labor constraints in herding and other activities was initiated. Gender and age as they affect herding was also analyzed. In order to measure the market effects on San Jose Llanga, two levels of analysis were initiated, at the micro level a study of marketing of livestock products from San Jose to several markets is under way, and a longitudinal analysis of the terms of trade between agriculture in San José and the non agricultural sector has completed its first phase. The interview with migrants to determine the role of sheep in this process is documented. The analysis of food security continues, assessing the effects of cash crops and the role of sheep in household and food purchases as well as consumption, completed with a nutrition study that will be further analyzed with household income and wealth. A study of strategies pursued by peasant household under climatic variability, especially the progress of the second survey is reported. Several students in the U.S. and Bolivia completed their degrees in economics and sociology with on-farm experience. A history of technology, and food security in peasant crop livestock systems were presented at two meetings. Synthesis progress is reported by Utah State University. Some of the research activities documented correspond to the Synthesis activity.
