Annual Report SR-CRSP SOCIOLOGY
Socio-economics research in the areas of animal health as well as the KDPG impact assessment continued during the period covered by this report. A survey of the markets for goats was completed. These activities were undertaken in close collaboration with the Socio-economics programs at Katumani and Mtwapa Research Centres and with various other institutions. A brief review of activities for the period and synopsis of on-going work are included. Processing of the baseline survey was finalized and the information distributed in August of 1995. The monitoring proceeded well in Machakos, but faced several problems in the Coast. Funding was limited this year. Collaborating scientists obtained other funding to continue the monitoring. Funding for 1995-1996 has contributed to solving many of the problems faced by the monitoring activity in the clusters.
Two members (one from Vet Labs, Kabete, and the other one from Katumani) left for the University of Missouri-Columbia to undertake degree education in December 1994. The collaborating scientist at Mtwapa also enrolled at a British University during mid 1995. Willy Njoroge and Lutta Muhammad joined the Kenyan SR-CRSP research team in September and October 1995 respectively. Two field assistants were engaged for Katumani in October and an additional one for Mtwapa. Several members of the team prepared various presentations. Funding sources for the activities in 1994-1995 were funds saved from the Kenya Sociology Components from year 15 SR-CRSP ($15,000) and NARP support ($7,000). Other events for this period include the PAC meeting in August 1995, research coordination with the PI Socio-economics in Kenya during October 1995 and the visit of the EEP in November 1995.
